It is obvious when you watch the I love Lucy show to see that Desi played the great role of a straight man to his wife's shenanigans, but did you know that he possessed a lot of energy that what he never showed or played as an actor?
First his musical talent was way beyond those few numbers he played on the show, which were most of the time serving a comedic act, he was after all, at a time, the band leader of a number one Latin band.
But he down-played his musical talents to let Lucy shine, making himself a struggling, even retiring band leader to a club management position or to full show business disillusionment at the last episode of "Lucy meets the mustache".
He even hinted about his movie carrier failure, when his Don Juan movie got sacked!
However, when you watch "Holiday in Havana" and "Desi Arnaz and his orchestra" short movie, you will find a great energy and talent that preceded his time, and later copied by none but Elvis himself! This is not shown in ILL, where you feel that all the fun is on the Lucy side, but she wouldn't have shined except for him!
She was cold and aloof , this is what made her fail to star in movies, she didn't portray a sympathetic character, the only thing that gave her sympathy on ILL was Desi. You will sympathize with her once you knew that her husband and the one who is always the victim of her sneaky plans is always forgiving and loving. That what made all of the viewers laugh without shame about each of her mighty schemes. Because you cannot love a person who is that destructive, unless you believe there is no harm done!
